"Sunset driving was made for a woman like you, and every night holds on just waiting for you..."
I think some people briefly enter into our lives to remind us of where we are going, or where we should not go. They exist as little glimpses of a version of heaven or hell that is uniquely visible to you. It could be something really obvious like seeing an influential artist in concert, or images of the drug-addicted on the streets of a big city. Or, it could be more subtle. An invitation or a warning, is a lighter way to phrase it. There are some people that pass through that I find to be inspiring, even if not for long.
‘Lauren McGill’ was one such case. I knew her for a short period of time, but I got a strong feeling that she was something of a genius waiting to be discovered. She was an actress, an instrumentalist… she could do it all. It was very cool to watch things build in her mind. So, I imagined how her life might pan out. I imagined that her search for her own identity mirrored the classic artist, wandering troubadour sort of image.
All I could think of while writing this song was how the drive out to Los Angeles might look: coming into the city on a beach road, a sunset shimmering over Venice Beach. Ideally this drive would be made in a classic car with the top down. I think it’s got a brown leather interior. I adore that warm, inviting, optimistic image and feeling associated with that. Hence, I thought “sunset driving was made for a woman like you” was appropriate. The feeling inspired by that sunset drive was perfectly representative of where I thought she was headed.
So off she goes, taking flight, I thought. I figured she would go around breaking the hearts of most every guy she encountered, which was an extra, fun, reckless element to this story. Then, I imagined being one of those poor sods. I shudder to think!
Go take flight!
Love,
NM
